Fashion Inspiration: 50s Glam

The term “vintage apparel” generally refers to any clothing produced from 1920-1960s, though the term is used more loosely today. I’m going to focus on fashion from the late 50s and early 60s because it features a feminine look that makes me nostalgic!
As a long time lover of lady-like fashion, I was delighted when my favorite TV show, Mad Men, became the inspiration for so many runway collections! Vintage fashion has made a major comeback, and it doesn’t always require thrifting for authentic vintage clothing (though, it’s fun to search for an original!). So many brands are embracing this ladylike look and I love that characters like Betty Draper have been the muse!
Here are my Betty Draper vintage-inspired looks!
Both of these looks include a dress - is there anything more feminine? Betty and women of the era often wore floral or polka dots, both of which have had a recent comeback! A nice structured and ladylike handbag was another staple of the 50s and 60s. You didn’t see hobo handbags or other large, oversized bags. They were all very structured and often carried by two small handles and featured clasps or other details. And other accessories, including gloves, scarves, and cat eye sunglasses weren’t just for dressing up - they were an every day thing. I love how pretty those accessories are! A bold lip, like red or bright pink, was another signature of the time period. It will definitely complete your look and take you straight back to the era.
